AgentService is a framework for developing distributed multi-agent system based on the Common Language Infrastructure (like .NET or Mono). It provides a complete set of tools to design, develop, mantain and monitor multi-agent sytems. AgentService developers use Protégé to build ontologies representing the agent knowledge base and the message contents.    (836)

This work investigates the use of ontologies in the data analysis step of the KDD process. Our objective is to support the data preparation phase adding a semantic level to the data in order to select the most important features to the target problem. More specifically, this project applies an on-line analytical process to explore ontologies and makes a semantic mapping between the multi-dimensional ontology representation and the tabular format used in the OLAP tools. This tabular format can be translated to specific formats used by different data mining workbenches or can be exported as an XML file or imported back to refine the ontology model.    (5G2)

A common background underlying database and ontology research is well known. Although ontologists and data modellers have been working together to bridge both areas, for example, in topics like conceptual modelling, database integration and metadata representation, less has been discussed about online analysis and multi-dimension mapping among ontologies and databases. Our approach explores this gap and applies Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) to the ontology analysis in order to refine the ontology model and improve the data and domain understanding. The Ontology On-line Analytical Preprocessing (OOLAP) enables detailed and human driven analysis of the domain.    (5G3)

Creating episode guides, cross references, translated titles, collectables, people, and events database. The Japanese series UruseiYatsura will be the test series. It is our hope that our ontology will be useful to anyone who wants to catalog any fictional series.    (4M8)

We have used Protege to develop an ontology for internet business models. We work with companies in Africa primarily to help them become more competitive in the international markets utilizing the internet. We came up with the idea to develop an ontology of the different internet business models. The application will guide a business in choosing the appropiate business model.    (5HJ)

Civic Actions is a small, 100% F/OSS online services company that has a contract to create a faceted search facility for non-profit artist communities across the country. For example, if a San Francisco artist was looking for a performance space in Chicago, she could use this to find a performance space seating 500-1000 with sound amplification and other "facets". Data will initially be statically imported from an initial set of 4-6 participating organizations, but is expected to grow to many more feeds - probably via RSS - in the foreseeable future. We are basing our work on RAP (RDF API for PHP) and the search site will be hosted by a Drupal installation.    (8DA)

This work presents a ontology of purchases of the public universities, in Brazil. Taxonomy on the activities of purchases in public universities, in Brazil, aiming at to assist conceptual models for the process of dimensional modeling, in the creation of matrix of slide bars for date warehouse and date mart, in standardized way for uniformity and interoperabilidade of databases.    (9BP)

The CNOSSO Project is partially funded by MIUR – Ministero dell’Istruzione, dell’Università e della Ricerca – Italy. Among the project's objectives is the re-usability of the knowledge concerning Cultural Heritage. To this end, whithin the project, we combine the different points of view through which dissimilar users observe the same cultural assets, attempting to safeguard their "knowledge customization" needs. This aim is pursued through the construction of a CIDOC CRM-based CORE ontology on which several and independent Domain ontologies are based (i.e. Domain ontology import the Core Ontology). Ontologies are produced by means of Protege.    (5L8)

The COBrA-CT project will develop a client/server-based model for ontology curation using the OGSA-DAI Grid middleware.    (5HU)

The system will allow remote users to create and submit annotated changes to ontologies and also to participate in the review process. The system will also support the curator by providing the appropriate management tools and visualisations. A key element of our solution is to re-engineer the COBrA ontology editor and mapping tool as a Protege plug-in. This tool will communicate with an ontology management server. Distributed, loosely-controlled, and evolving ontologies pose an interesting challenge to groupware technology. Available tools do not promote collaboration, discussion, and exchange of ideas, all of which are critical components of any ontology development process in a geographically distributed community. Although it is possible for several users to edit the same file, discussion amongst domain experts is not promoted by the interaction nor the interactivity between information and informants. Groupware technology should support, in a more sophisticated way, those processes in which different domain experts have to interact via electronic means. It is necessary to provide cognitive support for the ontology development process in loosely centralized environments. Conceptual maps should play a more central role in the ontology development process, not only during knowledge elicitation but also promoting interaction and access to the information. We are developing an extension of Protege that aims to provide an environment for ontology development within distributed, loosely-controlled, and evolving environments.    (5L2)

The project will develop the world’s first theoretical framework and original computational models of biologically plausible artificial neural networks that simulate neural activity of certain brain areas in relation to internal networks of genes. We call these models “computational neurogenetic models”. They may lead to the discovery of yet unknown dynamic relationships between genes and states of the brain. Models will integrate relevant gene and brain data and knowledge to model certain dynamic aspects of brain functioning, especially in genetically-related diseases such as epilepsy and schizophrenia, under different conditions, for instance with the presence of drugs, and to allow qualified prognosis. Models will be validated on real data. So far such a scientific endeavour has not been attempted. The results and knowledge will be made publicly available through an online Gene-Brain-Disease Ontology database and scientific publications. An extension of computational neurogenetic framework for modelling other complex biological processes will also be investigated. The research will help the software industry to develop more sophisticated intelligent information systems for applications in medicine and healthcare. The computational neurogenetic framework will make a significant contribution to the areas of computer and information sciences, neuroinformatics, and bioinformatics, and will have a high international impact.    (5EB)

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has implemented Protege to manage an RDL/OWL description of our new media content objects, for publishing to our Web sites, interactive TV, mobile platforms, etc. We have created an OWL ontology describing our metamodel, and we use Protege (with a few custom plugins) to create object schemas and interaction designs for editing these object types in our content management systems. We will be speaking about this project at XTech Europe 2006 in Amsterdam in May.    (5TE)

Coalition Secure Management and Operations System will provide a capability for multiple disparate Command and Control applications to share vital battlefield information within a coalition enviornment. With a smarter exchange of information to the right systems at the right time we hope to reduce confusion on the battlefield thus reducing "Friendly Fire" incidents. In order to accomplish this we would like to make use of the Protege product in order to model ontologies that would allow a more productive use of the information exchange.    (5KD)

The Finnish Chapter of develops an ontology in data management domain. We have passed the basic studying phase of OWL and Protege and the year 2006 should see the first version, defined in Finnish language. Later, we will try to modify it into a multilingual version, adding Swedish and English.    (5L4)

We are using OWL/RDFS/RDF to encapsulate the semantic representation of natural language sentences and phrases. Currently, the engine is able to produce OWL/RDF graphs using a defined grammar and lexicon which can be extended. The program can also produce SeRQL queries from natural language questions and noun phrases. In the future, we hope to integrate Cypher into the Protege editor, allowing authors to generate schema and instance data using plain language statements and descriptions.    (742)

We are using OWL to document the conceptual metadata underlying a range of social science datasets (including survey data and administrative statistics). The goal is not to impose a single 'correct' conceptual framework but to document the multiple different sets of conceptual assumptions which different data-holders bring to a given area. Our pilot project focuses on drugs, using sources ranging from Department of Health mortality and morbidity data to the annual Mixmag clubbers' drug use survey.    (5T1)

Design-a-Trial is a complex decision support system that helps medical researchers plan a randomised controlled trial (RCT) and authors a trial protocol. The system incorporates an ontology of RCTs developed using Protege and is based on prior work by the Stanford Protege team.    (5L0)

Since the DrDC game lives in a digital world on the WWW it is natural that all relevant matters concerning computability should be addressed. For the past year we have been focusing on the transcription or recording of games. We have assumed that the played game will be available to anyone on the WWW in a form that will enable them to replay it in order to learn how such a game is played or to gain further experience, much as one might do to learn or improve in the playing of chess. But we need to do more for computability. In order that search engines (such as Google) can make "cultural" connections independently of human intervention our DrDC games must conform to the Semantic Web Ontology Language: OWL. For practical research purposes we are using a free ontology editor: Protege and the Protege-OWL plug-in, available from Stanford University.    (5TL)

OWL-DL: For the DrDC Ontology we deliberately restrict ourselves to that OWL based on Description Logics (DL), the latter being "a family of knowledge representation (KR) formalisms that represent the knowledge of an application domain (the "world") by first defining the relevant concepts of the domain (its terminology), and then using these concepts to specify properties of objects and individuals occurring in the domain (the world description)." (Baader et al. 2003, 43).    (5TM)

The project aims to develop a template-based approach for building effects-based operations (EBO) models to enable course-of-action (COA) planning at the strategy level. The EBO models are Bayesian network probabilistic models that represent the causal relationships between the actions, the effects (observed and unobserved, desired and undesired), and the goals (objectives). The main results of our research are: (1) a vocabulary for representing EBO templates and probabilistic causal mechanisms in the ontology language, OWL, and (2) an algorithm for transforming an EBO template in OWL to a Bayesian Network. Our template-based approach enables model sharing and reuse to enhance the efficiency and increase the speed of computing the EBO COAs to meet the increasing demands on shorter, higher tempo battlefield planning and execution timelines in today’s asymmetric warfare.    (5TG)

The project research is implemented in a tool called EBO Modeling (EM) Toolkit that takes EBO templates as input and produces effects-based Bayesian network models as output. Users can develop the templates in the Protege ontology editor using a graphical user interface (GUI) to model the EBO domain concepts as frames (classes) and specify their attributes and relationships. Given an EBO template and ontology, interactive forms in Protege enable users or domain experts to enter valid template instances. The EBO Modeling Toolkit processes the instantiated EBO template and the domain ontology to automatically compute the Bayesian network model and opens the model for editing and querying using the open source software suite, Bayesian Network tools in Java (BNJ). User can edit the model in BNJ and assert evidence to perform probabilistic inference in support of course of action (COA) development. The EM Toolkit computes the Bayesian network model in the XMLBIF format and has the capability to convert into BIF and Hugin NET formats. The templates and instances can be loaded and saved in various formats, including XML, OWL, and RDF (Resource Description Framework).    (5TH)

As part of a 10 year modernization of a large government agency (unidentified), The MITRE Corproation is developing a 10 year roadmap for information technology projects. It was necessary to catalogue and characterize over 200 projects currently underway or planned, how they interrelate, and how they were sequenced. The Protege system was used to catalogue and categorize all the agency's projects and relate them in a long term sequencing plan. The resulting ontology is being used as a program management tool by the Agency to gain an understanding of their current "as-is" architecture and plans and create a roadmap to the "to-be".    (5JB)

The European project for Standardized Transparant Representations in order to Extend Legal Accessibility (Estrella, IST-027665) aims to develop and validate an open, standards-based platform allowing public administrations to develop and deploy comprehensive legal knowledge management solutions, without becoming dependent on proprietary products of particular vendors. Estrella will support, in an integrated way, both legal document management and legal knowledge-based systems, to provide a complete solution for improving the quality and efficiency of the determinative processes of public administration requiring the application of complex legislation and other legal sources. Estrella will facilitate a market of interoperable components for legal knowledge-based systems, allowing public administrations and other users to freely choose among competing development environments, inference engines, and other tools.    (5CB)

Transontology (transcendental + ontology) is an ancient technology of consciousness enhancement based on the Esoteric Teaching of the Sanskrit Vedas, expressed in modern scientific terms. It has been carefully handed down for over 5,000 years as a secretive religious teaching. Transontology open-sources this powerful technology so that anyone can benefit from it, and interested professionals can develop new applications in their area of interest and expertise. Previous versions of Vedic teachings available in the West have been cripple-ware: deliberately distorted and incomplete copies of the original. The original source code and more powerful methods have been kept secret by esoteric traditions. Transontology provides the original, complete source code and integrated development environment to the public for the first time. Like any programming language or software environment, Transontology facilitates the development of applications. What kind of applications is an open question, limited only by the imagination and ingenuity of the developer. Mental therapy and problem-solving are only partial aspects of the possibilities inherent in Transontology. Increasing the human potential for happiness, creativity and productivity is an unlimited field. It will be interesting to see what kind of applications imaginative people create, once they have access to the tools to enhance their consciousness in effective and novel ways.    (8L8)
